Gift of Artist Adds to Contemporary Glass Sculpture Collection
Bergstrom-Mahler Museum received a significant glass sculpture donation from well-known glass artist Toland Sand. The sculpture is featured in the current exhibition, All That Glitters.
The new piece, called Tilted Persona, was accessioned in November to the museum's Contemporary Glass Sculpture Collection. The artist, Toland Sand, is known for his use of dichroic glass, a type of glass that contains micro layers of metal allowing a range of colors to be displayed, and polished crystal to create elaborate works of art.
Jennifer Bero, marketing and development director for Bergstrom-Mahler Museum said the addition builds the museum's credibility in the glass community and moves them toward their vision to be known as Wisconsin's Glass Museum. In early October, the museum announced its intent to refocus programming and exhibits solely on glass.
"We are so grateful for the generous donation that will help Bergstrom-Mahler Museum create exciting discoveries in glass for our visitors," Bero said.
The All that Glitters exhibition features contemporary, cold-worked glass sculpture. The Sand sculpture will be on exhibition until February 19, 2012, along with other stunning pieces by Toland Sand, Jon Kuhn, Christopher Ries, Sidney Hutter and others.
