The Wizards of Pop:  Sabuda & Reinhart

April10th - June 19th

Experience your favorite story books from a new perspective with the Wizards of Pop. This children’s book exhibition includes over 60 images from 13 picture and pop-up books by celebrated children’s book creators Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart.

The exhibition features innovatively engineered three-dimensional pages from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the Encyclopedia Prehistorica series, Cinderella, STAR WARS: A Pop-up Guide to the Galaxies, and Young Naturalist's Pop-Up Handbook: Beetlesand Butterflies, as well as imaginative two-dimensional artworks from such books as Saint Valentine, The Blizzard's Robe, and The Paper Dragon.

We will explore the fundamentals of paper engineering by building a series of increasingly complex pop-up structures and ultimately binding them into a book. In addition, pop-up books from contemporary masters will be viewed and discussed.

Explore the fundamentals of drawing. Join us for a 30-45 minute instructor-led drawing session.  Then, you are on your own to try out a variety of drawing materials artists use and create your own piece.

April 10, 11am-2 pm                    Art Activity Days: The Art of Paper Engineering
Learn about the art of paper engineering and celebrate the opening of our exhibit, The Wizards of Pop: Sabuda and Reinhart.

May 1, 11am-2 pm                    Art Activity Days: Pop-ups: Cards & Books
Using pop-up books by Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart for inspiration, learn basic folds for creating a pop-up.

June 5, 11am-2 pm                     Art Activity Days: Books as Art

Books can be works of art. Join us for  a 30-45 minute instructor-led demonstration about how to make a simple book. You will then have time and a variety of materials to add to your book or make another.

Enroll in Freestyle Fridays to learn about new ways to make art, yet have the freedom to create what you imagine in your own personal style. Kids will have a chance to try a variety of projects (i.e. comic strips, altered books, 3-D creatures, expressive painting, drawing journals) and explore a variety of materials in the company of other creative kids. The instructor’s focus will be on encouraging creativity and honoring personal expression.  (supplies included)

May 5:  PAINTING WITH ACRYLIC - Learn the basic techniques of painting with Acrylics using brushes and palette knives.
May 12:  LANDSCAPE PAINTING USING ACRYLIC PAINT AND INK - Create a landscape painting using ink and acrylic painting techniques learned in the previous class.
