Victorian Glass Highlights

Amethyst Overshot Basket
Possibly Boston and Sandwich Glass Co.
American
ca. 1880-1900

Overshot glass looks like crushed ice. In this process, the gather of hot glass was rolled in crushed glass and reheated just enough to make the glass workable, but not enough to melt the crushed glass. After re-heating, the hot glass was blown to shape. The amethyst color is considered rare. This basket is star shaped when viewed from above. Bequest of Mrs. E. H. Bergstrom, 1958.

Amberina Vase
New England Glass Co.
American
1883

Lily or trumpet form of transparent, heat sensitive amber glass. Amberina was a glass sensation in 1883. It was developed by Joseph Locke of NEGC who was instrumental in developing many other glass patents during this period. The process was discovered by the accidental addition of gold to the amber glass formula. With heat, the gold/amber color turned red. Bequest of Mrs. E. H. Bergstrom, 1958.
